What makes this particularly notable is that she hasn't been thrown in at the deep end. Class 5 is the entry-level tier of British racing, the grade where horses are given every opportunity to get off the mark. Mrs Maisel has had three shots at that level and come up empty each time. For context, winning 0 from 3 at the easiest level available is a signal that something hasn't clicked yet — whether that's fitness, confidence, or simply finding the right conditions on the right day.
She's now returning from a break of around three months, which is worth watching. Horses can come back from a rest looking sharper and more settled, and trainers often use a break deliberately to reset a horse that's been finding things a bit much. John Berry, who trains her out of Newmarket in Suffolk, has had a solid enough season — 13 winners sent out from the yard, so there's clearly ability in the team. The question is whether Mrs Maisel can finally tap into some of that form.
Until she gives us something more to work with, she remains a horse that needs to prove herself at the most basic level. Three months off and a fresh start might be exactly what she needed — but she has a lot to show before that argument carries much weight.
