Her recent form has been patchy—she raced just yesterday and finished second, but before that she has been caught in the middle of the pack or beaten, with just one win in her last six outings. Jonathan Portman's yard, based in Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, trains her, and Portman himself notes that Mrembo has "more winning in her" at her current racing level. He points out that she needs fast, dry ground to show her best, and that she is the kind of horse who has to be in the right mood on the day—a temperament quirk she inherited from her mother, whom the yard also trained. Her jockey Olivia Tubb has ridden her in 21 races and won 3 times, a winning rate slightly better than Mrembo's overall record.
The puzzle with Mrembo is typical of many long-serving racehorses: she competes mostly in Class 5 races, where she has just one win from 23 attempts, yet at Bath she is a different animal entirely. That track suits her, and when conditions are quick and dry, Portman believes there are still wins to be found. At seven years old, she is hardly past it, and with a win last summer, she is still active enough to matter. Brighton is on the agenda, according to the trainer, so there may be another chapter to her story yet.
