Mr Twig is two years old, which means this is his first look at a racecourse, and first impressions are genuinely hard to predict. Some horses take to it immediately; others need the experience before the penny drops. What we do know is that he comes from a yard in fine form. Michael Bell trains out of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing — and his team has already sent out 45 winners this season alone. That is a serious number, and it tells you Bell knows how to have a horse ready on the day. Trainers with that kind of momentum tend to be selective about where they pitch their debutants, so Mr Twig's appearance is at least a sign that those who know him best think he is ready.
Beyond the breeding and the trainer's form, there is simply nothing else to go on yet — which, depending on your outlook, is either frustrating or exciting. Mr Twig is an unopened letter. Everything interesting about him is still to come.
