What makes Mr Ragstone worth keeping an eye on has nothing to do with what he has achieved yet, and everything to do with who is looking after him. His trainer, Willie Mullins, operates out of Muine Bheag in County Carlow and is widely regarded as one of the most powerful forces in racing on either side of the Irish Sea. The yard has already sent out 230 winners this season alone — a number that puts most training operations to shame and tells you that horses in this stable tend to improve and find their level with time. When a horse with a blank record comes from a yard firing at that rate, a single poor run is rarely the whole story.
It is far too early to write Mr Ragstone off. One race tells you almost nothing about a horse's ceiling, and in the hands of a trainer with Mullins' record of patient, long-term development, yesterday's ninth place is best treated as a first chapter rather than a conclusion.
