Mr Glass

The first chapter of his career came quickly. He opened his account at Chepstow in October 2021, then followed it up just a month later with a win in one of the top races in Britain — a Class 2 at Newcastle in November 2021. That Newcastle win came with a telling postscript from his owner, John Dance, who noted that the horse doesn't do much once he hits the front — he needs something to race against, or he switches off. It's a quirk that has probably cost him on more than one occasion. The trainer had bigger ambitions still, sending him to a Grade 1 race shortly after, where he was beaten 18 lengths — but the horse that beat him, Constitution Hill, went on to become one of the finest hurdlers of his generation, so the company Mr Glass was keeping in late 2021 was no embarrassment.

Since then, the wins have dried up. His most recent victory came at Wincanton in January 2025 — over 15 months ago now — and his last six races show just one win and a single third place among them, with blanks the rest of the time. He has spent most of his career competing at Class 5, the bread-and-butter level of the sport, winning 1 from 4 at that grade. For a horse whose trainer once described him as having a long-distance chasing career written all over him — and who once rubbed shoulders with the very best — that's a quiet existence.

What makes Mr Glass worth watching is the sense of unfinished business. He raced just once in the last recorded stretch of form before his Wincanton win, suggesting a horse who has been carefully managed rather than run into the ground. He is still active, having raced just one day ago. Whether there is one more performance in him that recalls those November 2021 days remains to be seen.
