Mr Escobar

The trainer is Willie Mullins, based at Muine Bheag in County Carlow, and the scale of that operation is almost impossible to overstate. The yard has sent out 220 winners in the current season alone — a number that makes most training operations look like a side project. When a horse carries the Mullins name, it tends to mean something, even if the win column is not overflowing.

Mr Escobar's two career victories are an interesting pair. The first came at Dundalk in January 2023, and the second at Sedgefield in November 2024 — nearly two years apart, and both at tracks on opposite sides of the Irish Sea. That Sedgefield win is now 18 months old, and the last six runs have brought finishes of 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and then a trio of mid-pack results, suggesting a horse whose form has drifted rather than sharpened. A second place in there is encouraging, but the more recent runs — three finishes of 13th and a 9th — paint a picture of a horse whose best may have come and gone.

His biggest challenge has been stepping up in class. In the top-tier races he has entered — four races at Class 2 level, some of the most competitive events in Britain — he has drawn a blank, zero wins from four attempts. That is not a disgrace; those races attract the best horses around, and simply competing in them says something. But it does suggest his ceiling may sit just below that level.

Brian Hayes has been in the saddle most often, riding him 7 times for that single win together — a win rate of 14%, or roughly 1 in 7 rides. Mr Escobar raced just yesterday, which means he is very much an active participant in the current season, still out there, still giving it a go.
