Mount Ruapehu

The headline fact is Southwell. Three races there, three wins. A perfect record. That is not a coincidence — that is a horse who simply thrives on that particular track, possibly the surface, possibly the shape of the course, but whatever the reason, he has never once been beaten there. His most recent win came at Southwell just three weeks ago, so this is a horse who is not living off past glories. He is right in the middle of a purple patch.

That recent form tells an interesting story too. In his last 6 races, he has won twice and finished second once — a productive run by any measure, and a sharp contrast to the quieter spells earlier in his career. The blank result buried in there (the dash, which signals he did not finish) is the one blot, but around it the horse is clearly in good nick.

He also has a clear preference for normal ground conditions, which matters more than casual observers might realise. On a dry, fast surface he has won 5 times from just 10 races — that is an extraordinary 50% win rate, or 1 in every 2. When conditions suit him, he becomes a different proposition entirely.

Iain Jardine trains him from Carrutherstown, a yard that has been in excellent form this season with 57 winners sent out. Andrew Slattery rides him most often — 18 times in the saddle together — though they have only combined for 1 win at a 6% rate, which suggests the partnership is more about consistency of routine than a magical combination. The horse's results suggest he does his best work when everything else clicks into place: the right track, the right ground. Get those two things right, and Mount Ruapehu has already shown he can be very hard to beat.
