Motherland

Motherland is a 3-year-old trained by Gordon Elliott at Longwood in County Meath. The horse made its debut a day ago and finished outside the placings, meaning it will need to improve significantly if it is to trouble the judges in future races. Elliott's yard has been in excellent form this season, sending out 210 winners, so the trainer clearly knows how to get horses ready for racing — which suggests Motherland may benefit from that experience as it learns what racing is really about. Many horses need a run or two to settle into their new life on the track, and a debut that produces no result is hardly unusual or discouraging. How the horse fares in its next couple of races will tell us whether there is genuine ability beneath the surface.
