Morell River

Trained by Colin Bowe out of Enniscorthy in Co. Wexford, the horse is essentially a local, and there may be something in that familiarity. Bowe's yard has sent out two winners this season, and Morell River accounts for both of them — which tells you this horse is currently carrying the team's momentum on its back. Sean O'Keeffe has been the regular rider, partnering Morell River in six of its nine races and taking one of those wins together, winning roughly 1 in every 6 rides on the horse. That's a working relationship still being refined, but this week's win suggests it may be clicking at the right time.

The recent form is the most interesting part of the picture. Reading the last six results from most recent backwards — win, then eighth, then win, then fifth, then fourth, then an eleventh — it tells you this is a horse that blows hot and cold. The two wins are sandwiched around some indifferent showings, which means backers need to catch Morell River on the right day. But having raced just yesterday and come away with a victory, right now appears to be a very good day indeed.
