Moon Over Miami

Beckett trains out of Kimpton in Hampshire, and his yard has sent out 109 winners this season alone — that is the operation behind this horse, one of the busiest and most successful in the country. Even so, Moon Over Miami has been what Beckett diplomatically calls "a complicated horse" and "not an easy one". The trainer has spoken openly about having to find a specific way to train it, and about a long road to get to this point. The all-weather surfaces did not suit it at all. So when Moon Over Miami won a Class 2 race at Newbury in April 2025 — one of the better races below the very top level — it felt like a genuine breakthrough, and Beckett said as much afterwards.

The numbers back up what the conditions point to. On normal ground, Moon Over Miami has won 2 of its 3 races — 67%. At middle distances of a mile and three or four furlongs, again 2 wins from 3 races, the same 67%. These are not coincidences; this horse has a very specific sweet spot, and when the race fits the profile, the results follow. Jockey Hector Crouch, who has been aboard for 6 of its 8 races, has won 2 of those — roughly 1 in every 3 rides together — and the partnership looks settled.

What makes Moon Over Miami interesting looking ahead is where Beckett thinks it is headed. After noting that the horse pulled right throughout the Newbury win, he ruled out left-handed tracks like Chester and started talking about the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot — a famously long flat race, over two and a half miles, that sorts out the true stayers from the rest. Beckett believes this five-year-old will stay that distance well. Whether that proves right remains to be seen, but the trainer knows this horse better than anyone, has waited patiently to find what makes it tick, and clearly thinks the best is still to come.
