Mojo Ego

That one career win came at Doncaster in November 2023, and it remains his only trip to the winner's enclosure — now more than 30 months ago. Since then, across his last six races, he has posted a sequence of 7-8-4-2-2-8, which tells an interesting story in itself: two runner-up finishes in there suggest he can still get himself involved, but the more recent efforts (seventh, then eighth last time out, just a day ago) suggest he is finding things tough right now. The pattern is of a horse that occasionally catches the eye without quite delivering.

James Moffatt trains him from his yard near Cartmel in Cumbria, a small, tight-knit operation that has sent out 11 winners this season — a solid return that shows the team knows how to place their horses. Moffatt first brought Mojo Ego to Britain as a juvenile, having arrived from France where he had shown promise on the flat under the highly regarded trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. The hope was that jumping hurdles would unlock something in him, and that one Doncaster win in Class 4 company — winning roughly 1 in every 9 races at that level — suggested there was a moment when it all clicked.

Charlotte Jones has partnered him most often in the saddle, riding him in 10 of his races without a win between them. That is not necessarily a damning statistic — plenty of horses simply need things to fall right on the day — but it does underline that Mojo Ego has not made either of their lives easy. He is the kind of horse that keeps showing up, keeps getting placed often enough to maintain interest, but has not found a way to repeat that November afternoon at Doncaster. With 16 races on the clock and only one win, he will need something to change to remind everyone what he is capable of.
