Mission Command

Both wins came in the summer of 2024 — first at Ripon in July, then at Beverley in August — and nothing has followed since. That last victory at Beverley is now 21 months in the rear-view mirror, and the most recent six runs have produced one tenth-place finish and five podium spots without a win among them. The pattern is consistent enough to be both reassuring and slightly maddening: Mission Command arrives, runs its race, finishes third, goes home. On five of its last six outings it has been competitive, just not quite competitive enough.

The horse does most of its racing at Class 4 level — a solid mid-tier in British racing, not glamour events but a genuine test. At that level it has won 2 of 13 races, roughly 1 in every 6 and a half, which is actually a respectable conversion rate when a horse is running consistently in the top three. Jockey Callum Shepherd has been the regular partner in the saddle, riding Mission Command in six of those races for one win together — a win rate of about 1 in 6, or 17%, which is better than the overall career average suggests.

The trainer behind the operation is Jennie Candlish, based at Basford in Staffordshire, and hers is clearly a yard in decent form — 61 winners sent out this season alone, which is a serious number for a yard operating at this level. Mission Command raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in active campaign mode. The question now is whether Candlish can find the right opportunity to end a 21-month drought for a horse that clearly has ability, clearly tries, and clearly just needs one good day to go its way.
