What makes the picture a little more complicated is where she's been running. Class 5 is the entry level of British racing, the kind of race designed to give horses like Miss Pearl a genuine chance. She has run seven times at that level and won none of them. That's not a horse who has been mixing it with better animals and coming up short — that's a horse who has consistently had the opportunity and hasn't taken it.
Jockey Tabitha Worsley has been in the saddle for six of those races and is still searching for that first win together. The partnership has produced nothing on the board yet, though to be fair to both of them, the raw material hasn't been easy to work with. Trainer David Rees, based in Clarbeston in Pembrokeshire, has sent out three winners this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get a horse to win. Miss Pearl, at least so far, hasn't been one of them.
She raced just yesterday, so whatever happened is still fresh. At ten years old and without a win to her name, the question isn't really whether she can become a champion — it's whether that first winning moment might still come. Racehorses can surprise you. Miss Pearl hasn't yet, but she keeps showing up, and in racing, that counts for something.
