What makes that Windsor win worth remembering is the distance it came over. At the shorter sprint trips of five to six-and-a-half furlongs, Miss Nightfall wins 1 from 4 races, a 25% win rate that is genuinely strong and suggests she has real pace when conditions suit. That is the version of her that everyone is waiting to see again. The problem is that she has typically been asked to compete at Class 2 level — some of the better races in the country — and across six attempts at that level she has not won once. She is a horse who looks sharper over a short, fast sprint, but keeps being tested against some very good company.

Her recent form makes for difficult reading: finishing fifth, ninth, tenth, seventh, fifth, and fourth across her last six races. The tenth suggests there have been days when things have gone badly wrong, though the placings either side of it show she is not disgraced every time out. She raced just one day ago, so whatever happened most recently is still fresh — this is a horse very much in the middle of her season, not one being rebuilt from a long absence.

She is trained at Newmarket by James Fanshawe, a yard that has sent out 45 winners already this season — a healthy total that speaks to a busy, competitive operation. Fanshawe knows how to place horses, and with a four-year-old who clearly has a preferred trip and a preference for faster ground, finding exactly the right race at the right distance will be the key to unlocking another win. Miss Nightfall has the ability. The question is whether everything lines up for her again the way it did that evening at Windsor.
