Miss Moonshine

Her wins have come at the lower end of the sport's class structure, where she has raced most of her career. In Class 6 races — the entry-level tier of British racing — she has won 4 from 31 attempts, a win rate of around 13%, or roughly 1 in 8. That is actually a better number than her overall record suggests, and it points to a horse who performs best when she is not asked to step beyond her comfort zone.

The partnership with jockey Oliver Searle is one of the more interesting threads in her story. He has ridden her in 30 of her 40 races, winning 4 of them together — again, 1 in every 7 or 8 rides. That kind of continuity is not accidental. When a jockey keeps coming back to the same horse, it usually means the trainer sees something worth persisting with, and Rod Millman's yard in Devon has clearly had faith in her. Millman has sent out 40 winners this season, so this is a yard that knows how to get horses to win — which makes Miss Moonshine's own drought a little harder to explain away.

That drought is the elephant in the room. Her last win came at Southwell in March 2024, more than 26 months ago. Since then, across her last six races, she has not troubled the scorer — finishing fourth at best, and ninth twice. She raced just yesterday, so the legs are willing, but the wins are not coming. Her very first victory arrived at Kempton Park in January 2023, and there was a time when the record was ticking along nicely. Right now, though, Miss Moonshine is a horse whose followers are being asked to be patient, and whose next win, whenever it comes, will have been a long time in the making.
