That said, three placed finishes from those ten races show Mini Getaway isn't simply making up the numbers. Finishing second or third means the horse has been competitive on occasion, just not competitive enough when it counts most. There's a difference between a horse that's hopelessly out of its depth and one that keeps finding a rival or two too good — Mini Getaway appears to be the latter, which is some consolation, but consolation only goes so far.
The recent form makes for interesting reading. A finish of eighth in one of the last six races stands out as the low point, but either side of that the horse has been placing fairly consistently — a second, two thirds, and a fourth suggest Mini Getaway is finding a level where it can be involved without winning. Jockey Charlie O'Dwyer has been the regular partner for five of those races together, yet the pair are still searching for a win as a combination. Five races without a win together isn't a disaster, but it does mean the partnership is yet to click in the way the yard would hope. Raced just one day ago, Mini Getaway is clearly a busy, active horse — and with form suggesting it can place, perhaps the hope is that one more run, in the right race, finally brings the breakthrough that has been so elusive across a decade of trying.
