Minella Crooner

The most interesting chapter of his career is Punchestown. He has won 3 of his 8 races there — that is better than 1 in 3 at a single track — including a good staying chase at the festival in May 2024. His trainer at the time, Gordon Elliott, was effusive afterwards, saying Minella Crooner was able to dictate the race on his own terms, and that the jockey, Sam Ewing, was brilliant in allowing him to do exactly that. There is something telling in that description: this is a horse who travels well, jumps big when he needs to, and wins races by controlling them rather than overpowering rivals. He is now trained by Sarah Humphrey at her yard in West Wratting, Cambridgeshire, a yard that has sent out 8 winners already this season.

He is at his best when the ground is soft or wet — 5 wins from 12 races in those conditions, a win rate of over 40%. On fast, dry ground he is a different proposition entirely, and Humphrey has been open about the plan: pick and choose staying races where conditions suit him, and trust that he will pop up and win one, as he reliably does each season. That is not a glamorous strategy, but it is an honest one, and it has worked.

The one area where he has genuinely come up short is at the very top level. In 3 races at Class 1, the elite tier of British racing, he has not won. That gap between "course specialist" and "top-flight contender" is real, and at ten years old it is unlikely to close. But for a horse built to dominate a particular track in particular conditions, that is hardly a damning verdict. Punchestown in the wet, with a jockey who trusts him — that is when Minella Crooner is at his absolute best, and there are not many horses you can say that about so clearly.
