Milteye

What makes Milteye genuinely interesting is his fondness for wet ground. On muddy or waterlogged tracks, he wins roughly 1 in 3 races—a win rate of 33 percent, compared to his overall 17 percent. He landed his most recent victory at Ripon in April on one of those proper wet days, and his record includes a win at Carlisle in July through what Bethell describes as "bottomless" conditions. The trainer was so worried about the going that she nearly pulled him out before the race, yet he handled it better than expected. For a horse running at Class 5 level—where he has won 3 of 9 races—that kind of dependability in the mud is valuable. Bethell's yard has sent out eighteen winners this season, and Milteye has been a steady contributor.

The horse is currently leased by two partnerships: The Rise One Partnership owns half, with the other half remaining with the original owner-breeder. Bethell has indicated he will head to the sales at the end of the season. That tells you something: Milteye is a useful horse, but not one being kept at the yard as a cornerstone of the future. He is a working animal, consistent and honest, the kind that bridges seasons and keeps racing. With five months since his last win and seven races already this year, he remains active and in form. His next start may come any week.
