Merrijig

Trained by John Berry out of Newmarket, one of the most famous racing towns in Britain, Merrijig sits in a yard that has found form this season — 13 winners sent out already, which tells you this is an operation that knows how to get a horse ready to run. John Berry's team won't be sending Merrijig out for the fun of it.

The most telling number in Merrijig's record is what happens on normal ground: 2 wins from just 3 races, a success rate of 67%. That's extraordinary. When conditions suit — not too wet, not too dry, just a standard racing surface — this horse transforms. Compare that to its overall record and you start to understand that ground really matters here. Get the conditions right, and Merrijig becomes a very different proposition.

Jockey Gina Mangan has clearly built a useful partnership with this horse. Of their 11 races together, Mangan has ridden Merrijig to 3 wins — that's better than 1 in every 4 rides (27%), well above the horse's overall win rate. When the two are paired up, things tend to go well. Most of Merrijig's racing has come at Class 5 level, which is towards the lower end of the scale, and even there it wins roughly 1 in 8 (13%) — but on the right day, in the right conditions, the ceiling is clearly higher.

Merrijig's most recent win came at Newcastle in November 2025, around five months ago, and with a race just yesterday the horse is clearly still very much in action. The recent form — a win, a handful of mid-field finishes, and a sixth — is mixed, but a horse that won as recently as five months ago and is still racing regularly at eight years old isn't done yet. The question is whether the right conditions come along again.
