What makes Mercurial slightly more interesting than its bare record suggests is its consistency in finding a place. Thirteen placed finishes from those 35 races tells you this is not a horse that fades into the background — it competes, it shows up, it just rarely gets its nose in front. Recent form tells a similar story: a second and a fourth mixed in among less encouraging efforts, active as recently as yesterday, which at least confirms the appetite is still there.

The partnership with Sean D Bowen is one of the more puzzling threads in this horse's career. Eighteen races together and not a single win — that is a long run of near-misses for any jockey-horse combination, and it raises a quiet question about whether a change of rider might unlock something. The Curragh, then, is the place where everything came together once, and given how rarely lightning strikes for this horse, that day in April 2024 clearly meant something.
