Mephisto

The key to understanding Mephisto is distance. He is at his best when races are run over two miles or more, and the record backs that up clearly: 5 wins from 32 races at those longer trips, a win rate of 16%, or roughly 1 in every 6 races. That is meaningfully better than his overall record, and it tells you something important — this is a horse who needs time to get into a rhythm, who wants the race to stretch out and test his rivals' stamina rather than their speed. Put him in a short, sharp contest and he tends to get found out. Give him room to breathe and he becomes a different animal.

Trained by Gerard Keane at a yard in Trim, Co Meath, Mephisto has been part of a productive season — the team has sent out 10 winners this year. His most regular partner in the saddle has been Colin Keane, though their record together reads just 1 win from 13 races, so it is not a partnership that has consistently clicked. His most recent win came at Tramore in August 2025, and he raced again just yesterday, which means he is very much a horse in active training with races still to be run.

First getting his head in front at Dundalk back in January 2023, Mephisto has taken a winding road to where he is now. But at nine years old, still racing, still winning, and still improving his recent figures, he is the kind of horse that rewards patient followers. The cynical view would be that five wins from 52 races is a modest return. The more interesting view is that he has saved some of his very best form for the back end of his career — and he isn't finished yet.
