The recent form makes for tough reading: finishes of eighth, fifth, and tenth across three races, with no place to show for it. That said, a fifth-place finish in the middle of that sequence suggests there has been at least one moment of promise, even if the horse hasn't been able to build on it. A 0 from 3 record is not unusual for a young horse finding its feet — some need time to fill their frame and work out what racing actually asks of them.
What does give genuine cause for optimism is who is doing the training. Archie Watson operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, one of the heartlands of British racing, and his yard has been in serious form this season — 63 winners and counting. That is a busy, confident operation, and the fact that Menwirr is still being campaigned rather than put away for the year suggests Watson and his team believe there is more to come. Trainers with yards firing at that rate tend to know which horses are worth persisting with and which aren't. Menwirr is clearly still in the plan.
