The three-year-old has run twice so far without troubling the judge, finishing fourth on one occasion and eighth on the other. Two races in, there is not a great deal to analyse beyond the fact that it has yet to find its feet. That is not unusual at this stage — plenty of horses take a few outings to figure out what racing is actually about — but the results so far are modest.
What is worth watching is that Mayflower Rock raced just yesterday, which means there is every chance of a quick reappearance. Cunha's team clearly have the horse fit and ready to run, and 45 winners in a season suggests this is a yard that knows how to place a horse when the time is right. Whether Mayflower Rock is about to turn the corner remains to be seen, but with a trainer in good form and a young horse still finding its way, it would be premature to write it off just yet.
