The concern is the direction of travel. Mayfair Market's most encouraging effort came a few races back when it finished third, and since then the placings have slipped further back rather than edging forward. A horse can be competitive without winning, but the recent trend toward sixth and eighth finishes hints that it may be finding life tougher as it gains experience, rather than easier — which is the opposite of what you want to see in a young horse still learning the job.
That said, it is worth noting who is doing the training. S Woods, based at Newmarket — the beating heart of British flat racing — has sent out 24 winners already this season, which speaks to a yard operating with real purpose and quality. Newmarket trainers tend to have large strings and plenty of options, so the fact that Mayfair Market keeps getting runs suggests the team still believes there is something to find. The horse raced just one day ago, so it is very much in active campaign mode, being kept busy rather than mothballed.
Whether that belief is justified remains the open question. At some point a horse needs to convert promise into a win, and six attempts without doing so starts to apply pressure. Still, three years old is young, and plenty of horses take time to figure it all out. The next run will be worth a look — not necessarily because a win feels imminent, but because another step backward would start making this a genuinely difficult case to argue for.
