That one win came at Down Royal on 5 September 2025, and it remains the sole moment of glory in his career so far. Down Royal is a track in Northern Ireland with a bit of character to it, and it clearly suited him that day. Eight months have passed since, and the win has not been repeated — his last six runs have brought two third-place finishes and a fourth, but nothing closer to the front. It is the story of a horse who is doing enough to stay interested but not quite enough to land the prize.

His preferred trip is somewhere between one mile six furlongs and two miles — the longer distances, where stamina matters as much as pace. Over that range he has raced 18 times and won once, a win rate of around 6%, or 1 in every 18 races at the distances he suits best. That is modest, but at least it shows his the yard are placing him sensibly rather than experimenting.

James Ryan rides him most often, and between them they have struck once from seven races together — roughly 1 in 7, or 14%. That is actually the most productive partnership Maxwell Smart has had, which suggests Ryan knows how to get the best from him. Trainer T.G. McCourt operates out of Stamullen in County Meath and has had a productive season, with 14 winners sent out so far — so the yard is in decent form even if this particular horse has been a slow burner. Maxwell Smart raced just one day ago, meaning he is very much in active training and still being given every opportunity to add to that solitary win.
