Maxident

The big condition is the ground. On wet, muddy going, Maxident transforms — he has won 2 of his 3 races on heavy ground, a two-from-three record that amounts to a 67% win rate. That's a remarkable number. Most horses never find a surface they dominate that convincingly. His trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy, who runs a busy yard out of Newmarket in Suffolk and has sent out 41 winners this season alone, has been open about it: this horse loves soft ground, and the team has been deliberate about waiting for the right conditions before committing him to a race. That kind of patience is a sign of a yard that knows what it has.

Maxident does his best work at a distance of around a mile and three or a mile and four furlongs — enough ground to properly stretch out and use his stamina. He won first at Leicester in April 2023, and most recently at Ffos Las in September 2024, that win coming on wet ground at a distance that suits him. It's a consistent picture: when the rain comes and the trip is right, he delivers.

The slight wrinkle is that he hasn't raced in roughly seven months, making this a return from a meaningful break. His regular jockey David Egan has ridden him seven times and won once together — a 14% win rate, or about 1 in every 7 rides. That's modest, but Egan clearly knows the horse. The form from his last six races shows a second, a fourth, then a return to second, and most recently a win — so he was building well before the layoff. Whether he comes back in the same form is the open question. What's clear is that if the ground is soft and the trip is right, Maxident is the kind of horse you want to be watching.
