Maxi Boy

That one win came at Newcastle on 1 October 2024, and it remains his only career victory to date — now nearly 19 months ago. Since then, he has gone six races without adding to that tally, though his recent form does show signs of consistency at the sharp end. His last six results read 2-2-3-8-8-4 (working back from most recent), meaning he has twice finished second and once third in that sequence. He keeps turning up, keeps getting placed, but the winning moment is proving elusive.

The distance range where he does his best work is seven furlongs to a mile — and yet even there, the record is modest: one win from 15 races at those trips, a win rate of about 7%, or roughly 1 in every 15. That single Newcastle win came over this kind of trip, so when conditions line up right, he is clearly capable. Most of his racing has come at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle tier of British racing — competitive enough that you need to be fairly useful to get near the front. In 13 races at that level, he is yet to win, which suggests he is operating at a grade where the competition is always just a touch sharper than his best.

He is trained by Fionn McSharry, whose yard has sent out seven winners this season — a respectable return that shows the operation knows how to place a horse to win. Maxi Boy raced just yesterday, so he is very much in active campaign. For a nine-year-old, that level of activity is a sign of a sound, durable horse who still has the appetite to compete. Whether he can find his way back to the winner's enclosure remains the question — but the placed form suggests he is rarely far away.
