Maui Breeze

That one bright moment came at Southwell in November 2024, and it now sits nearly 19 months in the past. Since then, Maui Breeze has run six times without troubling the winner's enclosure, with recent finishes of 7th, 7th, 11th, 9th, 2nd, and 5th. The second place is worth noting — there is clearly still enough ability there to get competitive — but the overall trend has been drifting in the wrong direction. An 11th-place finish in a sequence like this is the kind of result that raises questions about whether the horse is consistently putting its best foot forward.

The distance range of 5 to 6 and a half furlongs appears to be where trainer Wilf Storey targets Maui Breeze most often, and over those trips the record reads 1 win from 8 races, roughly 1 in 8. That is the best the horse has shown at any trip, which suggests the short-sprint distances suit better than anything else — but even so, it has not converted that suitability into wins at Class 5 level, which is where it runs most regularly. Zero wins from 8 races at that level is a difficult number to look past.

Jockey Paula Muir has been the regular partner, riding Maui Breeze five times together without a win. That is not necessarily a criticism of either horse or rider — sometimes a partnership simply has not clicked at the right moment yet. Storey's yard has sent out four winners this season, so the operation is capable of getting horses to win. Maui Breeze, who raced as recently as yesterday and is clearly still in active training, will need to find something it has been missing for the better part of a year and a half if it is going to add a second win to its record.
