What makes the situation worth watching, though, is who has the horse in their care. Ollie Sangster, based in Marlborough in Wiltshire, has sent out 42 winners already this season — that is the output of a yard that knows what it is doing and is clearly operating at a decent clip. Trainers with that kind of season do not tend to keep running horses pointlessly, so the fact that Marveling is still active and raced just yesterday suggests the team believes there is something in there worth coaxing out.

Three-year-olds are often works in progress. Some take time to figure out what they are doing, and a stable in form is probably the best possible environment for one still looking for a breakthrough. Whether Marveling can turn these near-misses into something more meaningful remains to be seen, but with a capable yard behind it and races presumably being chosen with care, it would be premature to write this one off entirely.
