The recent run of form makes for interesting reading. Going back through her last six races, she has finished 3rd, a blank, 3rd, 2nd, 4th, and 5th — so with the exception of one poor effort, she has been knocking on the door almost every time out. A second place is there, a clutch of thirds, and she raced just yesterday, meaning she is fit, active, and clearly being kept busy by her team. That level of consistency without a win can sometimes mean a horse is just a fraction short of what it takes at her current level — Class 5, which is the entry-level tier of British racing — or it can mean the right race simply hasn't come along yet.

She is trained by Ollie Sangster at his yard in Marlborough, Wiltshire, and the operation is clearly in fine form this season with 42 winners already on the board. That tells you this isn't a struggling setup sending out no-hopers — Sangster knows how to get a horse ready to win. Sean D Bowen has ridden her in five of those ten races without a win between them, but given how often she places, you wouldn't say the partnership has been a disaster. They just haven't had that moment where everything clicks at once.

At three years old, there is still time. Plenty of horses at this level find their feet with experience, and Marra Donna's form suggests she is not far away. Four places from ten races, with a second buried in recent form, is the profile of a horse that a trainer keeps running precisely because they believe in it. Whether that belief gets rewarded is the question — but anyone watching her races would have had reason to think it was about to happen several times already.
