Maralinga

The recent form figures tell their own story. In the last six races, the best Maralinga has managed is ninth place — with finishes of 9th, 10th, 10th, 14th, 12th, and 19th reading as a horse that is currently struggling to land a blow. These are not the numbers of a horse on the verge of a breakthrough. They are the numbers of a horse finding things difficult.

There is at least one area where Maralinga shows something approaching promise. Over longer distances — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — the record reads 1 win from 7 races, which is a win rate of 14%, or roughly 1 in every 7. That is comfortably the best return across any trip, and it suggests that when conditions suit and the distance is right, there is something there to work with. The winning jockey in that combination has been Gavin Ryan, who partners Maralinga regularly and also converts at around 1 in 7 of their outings together.

Timothy Doyle trains the horse from a small yard in Moyne, Co Tipperary, and has sent out 2 winners so far this season. It is a modest operation, and Maralinga reflects that reality — a horse competing at a level where winning is hard-earned and not always forthcoming. The fact that Maralinga raced just yesterday and remains active shows there is still appetite from the team to keep trying. Whether another Tipperary day like that September afternoon in 2023 is on the cards is another matter entirely, but the horse is still showing up, and in racing, that counts for something.
