Maple

The backstory is a good one. Maple arrived from Newmarket with a reputation for being hard to handle — fizzy, keen, the sort of horse who burns his energy before the race has even started. Jefferson's team took a patient approach, easing him into a quieter environment in North Yorkshire and choosing not to work him hard on the gallops. Instead, they schooled him gently and let the racecourse do the teaching. It took time, but it worked. He got his first win at Uttoxeter in May 2025, and then landed another at Sedgefield on April 1st of this year — just six weeks ago. That second win still feels fresh.

His best form comes on normal ground, where he has won 2 of his 6 races — a ratio of one in three, which is genuinely impressive by any standard. Over a distance of a mile and six furlongs to two miles, he has won 1 from 5, and that appears to be his sweet spot. Jefferson has also hinted that he benefits from having room to race when it matters — the suggestion being that he can get a little squeezed when the field bunches and the finish gets scrappy.

Jamie Hamilton has been his most regular partner, riding him in 10 of his 22 races and winning once together. That is a 10% win rate from their partnership, which sits just above Maple's overall career average of 9% — one win in roughly every eleven races. The Jefferson yard has sent out eight winners this season, so the operation is ticking along nicely, and Maple, who raced just yesterday, is clearly in the middle of an active campaign.

The most intriguing detail is this: in ten races at Class 4 level — the bread and butter of his career — he has yet to win. Both of his victories have come elsewhere. That suggests there may be more to find at the right level, on the right ground, with enough room to breathe.
