Magnificent Mel

Trained by Rod Millman at his yard in Kentisbeare, Devon, Magnificent Mel operates at Class 6, which is the entry-level tier of British racing — the kind of races specifically designed to give horses like this a realistic chance of winning. That makes the record of zero wins from five races at that level a little puzzling, because these are exactly the contests where Magnificent Mel ought to be competitive. The Millman yard is clearly in good form — 42 winners already this season is a healthy total — so the support and preparation are there. The horse just hasn't found a way to get its nose in front yet.

The recent form figures of 7-2-7-5-8 (with one non-completion in between) tell their own story. That second place is a glimmer of encouragement, suggesting Magnificent Mel can run a decent race on its day, but the results either side of it — mostly finishing mid-pack or towards the rear — make it hard to spot a consistent pattern of improvement. For a three-year-old still relatively early in its racing life, there is time to figure things out. But the clock is ticking, and the first win cannot come soon enough.
