That said, context matters. Two-year-olds are essentially teenagers finding their feet, and plenty of horses take time to figure out what is being asked of them. A tenth-place finish is not what anyone wants to see, but at this stage of a young horse's career it is too early to write off its potential entirely.
What is worth watching is the yard behind it. Trainer J S Moore operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire — one of the most storied training centres in British racing — and has sent out 17 winners already this season, which tells you this is not a small or struggling operation. Moore clearly knows how to get horses ready to win races. The question is whether Magical Life can eventually repay the faith being placed in it by a team that is clearly capable of producing results.
For now, the horse is one to keep an eye on rather than get excited about. If the form starts to improve over the coming weeks, that Upper Lambourn backing could make it a very interesting prospect. But the evidence so far is that it has some work to do.
