Magic Boy

That kind of bad luck — running well, but always finding one or two horses who turned out to be better than expected — followed him for much of his career. Trainer Nigel Tinkler, who operates out of Langton in North Yorkshire and has sent out 37 winners this season alone, was well aware of it. He described Magic Boy as unlucky not to win sooner, noting that he kept finishing close without getting his head in front. The plan was to bring him back to a shorter trip, somewhere between six furlongs and a mile, and find a race that suited him.

It finally clicked at Redcar on 4 November 2025, where Magic Boy recorded his first career win. Tinkler credited jockey Faye McManoman with a riding masterclass, saying she kept filling the horse with confidence throughout the race — a small but revealing detail. Magic Boy had apparently been lacking self-belief, and the right ride at the right moment made the difference. Over seven furlongs to a mile, he now wins 1 in every 4 races (one from four), which is a genuinely strong record at that trip compared to his overall win rate of roughly 1 in every 9 races across his career.

He hasn't raced since that win, with roughly six months now passed since Redcar. That's a significant break, and how he returns from it is the big question. Horses coming back after a long absence can take a run or two to find their best form. But there's clearly more to Magic Boy than his modest record suggests — he has been competitive in strong races throughout, and now he has that first win under his belt and, presumably, a bit more confidence to go with it.
