Magic Boy

His recent form tells the more encouraging part of the tale. In his last six races, Magic Boy has won twice and placed a further three times, including a second place just a week before his victory at York five weeks ago. That win at York in July was his second career success, and it came after nearly nine months without tasting victory. For a horse operating at Class 5 level — where he has actually won one race from five starts, a respectable 20% win rate — this represents genuine progress. Trainer Nigel Tinkler, based in North Yorkshire, has long believed Magic Boy was capable of better than his record suggested. When the horse finally won at Redcar, it came with the extra validation that he had been running against genuinely smart opposition all year. His debut run had finished fourth, but the winner that day, Spy Chief, later finished second in a top-level race at Royal Ascot, while the runner-up turned out to be a horse rated 105 — elite company for a young horse finding his way.

Tinkler's yard has been prolific this season with 37 winners, and Magic Boy appears to be benefiting from that productive environment. The trainer had flagged that shortening the distance — bringing Magic Boy back in trip to six or seven furlongs — could unlock further wins, and the horse's recent form suggests he may have found his level and distance. With two wins in his last six races, Magic Boy looks capable of adding to his tally, especially if the confidence that has clearly returned continues to build.
