Magic Basma

That sole victory came at Carlisle on 21 August 2024, and it remains the only time Magic Basma has made a racing crowd cheer. Since then, across six consecutive races, the wins have dried up entirely — though the placings haven't. Recent form reads 4-2-2-4-3-5, which tells an interesting story: this is a horse that routinely mixes it with the leaders and finishes close, just not quite close enough. A win rate of roughly 1 in every 14 races is modest by any measure, but the volume of placed efforts suggests Magic Basma is competitive, not outclassed.

Where the picture becomes clearer is at the top level. In five races at Class 1 — the very highest tier of British racing — Magic Basma has yet to win. Zero from five. That is a tough ask for any horse, and it hints that the yard may be testing the limits of what Magic Basma can achieve against the very best. There is no shame in that; plenty of horses find their level just below the summit and earn their keep by finishing second or third in good company.

Kevin Ryan, who trains Magic Basma from his Hambleton yard in North Yorkshire, is one of the more respected names in the north of England. His operation has sent out 45 winners already this season, which gives a sense of the quality and volume of horses he manages. A horse in his care that keeps placing but not winning is not being neglected — it is being placed thoughtfully, kept active, and given every opportunity. Magic Basma raced just one day ago, which means she is fit, fresh in the mind, and clearly still being campaigned with purpose. Whether that elusive second win is coming is the question — but the consistency of her form suggests she will keep making her rivals work for it.
