Maghlaak

The clearest pattern in Maghlaak's record is his love of wet ground. On muddy or sodden surfaces, he wins roughly one in every three races — four wins from eleven attempts. In normal or fast conditions, that drops dramatically. He also has a marked preference for distance; at the intermediate trip of one mile one furlong to one mile two furlongs, he has won three of his five races there, a win rate of 60 per cent. Goodwood is his course: two wins from four races at the Sussex track, most notably when he conquered a Class 2 race in May 2024 with top weight on his back, a performance his jockey Jim Crowley acknowledged as particularly impressive.

What makes Maghlaak frustrating rather than straightforwardly brilliant is his recent form. He has not won in his last six races, though he has placed third or better in four of them. His trainer Mark Walford, based in North Yorkshire, is clearly not discouraged. After Maghlaak's Goodwood victory, Walford noted that the horse had finished powerfully and showed genuine ability, though he wryly dismissed the horse's most recent effort at Redcar as a non-event — drawn in a hopeless position, the horse never got the chance to show what he could do. Walford's remarks hint at a horse whose talents are real but whose opportunities and conditions must align. The gap of eight months since his last win, which came at Southwell in November 2025, suggests he may need either ideal ground or ideal circumstances, or both, to break through again. At seven years old and still actively racing, time may be becoming a factor.
