What makes Maestrow's situation interesting is the yard it comes from. Trainer Ben Pauling, based in Naunton in the Gloucestershire countryside, has sent out 91 winners already this season — that is a stable in seriously good form. When a trainer is firing in winners at that rate, it tends to mean the whole operation is running smoothly: horses fit, staff sharp, timing well-judged. Maestrow hasn't managed to convert that momentum into a result yet, but it is not for lack of professional support behind the scenes.
At four years old, there is still time. Some horses simply take longer to click, and finishing fifth most recently — after two runs where it was trailing home in double figures — suggests something might finally be starting to come together. Whether that translates into a first win anytime soon is the question, but with a yard of Pauling's current calibre in its corner, Maestrow is at least in the right hands to find out.
