That said, the direction of travel is at least pointing the right way. That 16th on debut was evidently a rough start, but the horse has since finished 6th, then 7th, then 5th — creeping closer, race by race, without ever threatening to trouble the judge. Whether that trajectory continues is the key question. Plenty of horses take time to figure things out, and racing just yesterday means Luminous Approach is very much a work in progress rather than a finished article.
The trainer, Shaun Lycett, operates a small yard out of Leafield in Oxfordshire and has sent out 2 winners so far this season. That is a modest return, and it is worth being honest: this is not a powerhouse operation with string after string of ready-to-win horses. But small yards occasionally produce surprises, and the fact that Lycett keeps running Luminous Approach suggests he believes there is something worth persevering with. Whether that faith is rewarded remains to be seen.
