The first win at Down Royal came on 26 December 2022, and the most recent just three months ago on 20 January 2026. Whatever it is about that track — the shape of the bends, the ground, the atmosphere — Lucky Lyreen turns up there and delivers. Away from Down Royal, the picture is patchier. Recent form reads 9th, 13th, 5th, 1st, 13th, 5th going back from the latest run, which tells you this is not a horse that wins every week. But that win sandwiched in the middle of those mediocre efforts is exactly the kind of form that keeps a horse interesting.

Jack Kennedy, who rides Lucky Lyreen regularly and has won on 2 of their 6 races together — a win rate of 1 in 3, which is well above average — described something that will be familiar to anyone who has watched a naturally talented but slightly wayward athlete. The horse stays strong and will fight back when challenged, but tends to idle when in front and loses concentration at his hurdles. In other words, Lucky Lyreen needs to be kept honest, needs something to race against. That is not a fatal flaw — it is a personality.

Elliott himself has already signalled where the next chapter leads. Speaking last October, he suggested the horse had probably reached his ceiling over hurdles and would be switched to fences — a bigger, more demanding challenge, but one that could suit a horse with plenty of stamina and a bit of an attitude problem when things come too easily. Lucky Lyreen last raced 27 days ago and is still active, so that transition may already be underway. Whether fences bring out the best or expose the worst remains to be seen — but Down Royal will be worth keeping an eye on whenever this horse turns up there.
