The recent form tells the story of a horse treading water. In the last six outings, Love Orchid has managed two second-place finishes sandwiched between some tougher days: an eleventh place, a fourth, a sixth, and a ninth. That's respectable company on occasion, but no victories. Still, the fact that the horse was in a race just a day ago shows it is being kept active and is clearly sound enough to race regularly — which matters more than it sounds. Some horses fall apart under the demands of frequent racing. This one turns up.
Noel Meade's yard at Castletown, in County Meath, has been in sharp form this season with 42 winners, so Love Orchid is in the care of someone who knows how to get results. Whether this horse will be the one to break through remains to be seen, but it is still young and still learning. Three-year-olds often improve as the season progresses and as they gain experience. The placings suggest there is a level at which Love Orchid can be competitive. It just has to find that winning race.
