The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. Looking at the last six races, the finishing positions read 8, 8, 9, 11, 4, 7 — working back from the most recent — and there is precious little encouragement in those numbers. Finishing in double figures twice suggests races where Love Bomb has been well beaten, and the sole placing, that fourth, stands out as a rare bright spot in an otherwise difficult run. Six races without a win since that Down Royal breakthrough is a long barren stretch for a young horse still trying to establish itself.
What gives some cause for optimism is the team behind the horse. Trainer W McCreery operates out of Rathbride in Co Kildare, and the yard has sent out 21 winners already this season — a healthy tally that signals a stable in decent form. Love Bomb raced just one day ago, so clearly the yard believe there is more to come, and a trainer willing to keep running a horse is usually a trainer who still sees something worth working with. Whether Love Bomb can rediscover the spark that produced that Down Royal win remains to be seen, but at three years old, the story is far from finished.
