Looking Splendid

The key to understanding Looking Splendid is Kelso. The Scottish border track has seen this horse race nine times and win twice, including the first career win back in October 2025 and another just three weeks ago in early April 2026. Winning two from nine at the same track is not a coincidence — it is a pattern. Some horses simply suit a particular track's layout, its turns, its surface, and Kelso appears to bring out the best in this one. For a yard based in nearby Jedburgh, the short trip probably helps too. Gary Rutherford's team has sent out seven winners this season, and Looking Splendid looks like one of their live ammunition horses right now.

Normal ground conditions also matter here. All three career wins have come on a standard surface — three wins from nine races in those conditions, which works out at one in every three, a genuinely impressive ratio. On anything else, the record is blank. That is useful information: if the ground dries out or gets waterlogged, the chances shorten considerably.

One small puzzle is the partnership with regular jockey Bruce Lynn. Despite riding this horse seven times, Bruce Lynn has not yet been in the saddle for a win — zero from seven together. Given that Looking Splendid has now won three races, those victories came with other riders aboard. Whether that changes going forward is one of the more intriguing subplots. Looking Splendid raced just yesterday and remains fully active, so the next outing is presumably not far away. At a track like Kelso, on normal ground, this horse has become genuinely hard to ignore.
