He competes almost exclusively in Class 5 races, which are the bread-and-butter, entry-level contests that fill out a typical race day, and even there he has gone 0 from 9. Five placed finishes from 14 races tells you he is showing up and competing — he is not trailing in last — but there is clearly a gap between what he produces and what it takes to win. The recent form figures of 8, 6, and 3 suggest he is finding his way back into contention after a quieter spell, with that third-place finish the most encouraging sign he has given in a while.
He is trained by Joe Tickle at a yard based in Stoodleigh, Devon, which is about as far from the glamour of Newmarket as it is possible to get. That is not a criticism — small regional yards often develop horses steadily and know their animals well — and the fact that the team has sent out 20 winners this season shows there is real ability behind the operation. Locked Down Lad has raced just one day ago, so he is very much in the middle of his campaign right now.
The honest assessment is that he is a horse who has not won yet but keeps turning up, keeps placing occasionally, and is trained by a yard clearly capable of winning races. Whether he eventually breaks through depends on finding the right race on the right day — and at six years old, he still has time to figure it out.
