Little Miss Magic

That sole victory at Bath is the defining chapter of her career so far. Whether the conditions, the track, or simply the day suited her, something clicked — and it remains the high point she has not yet been able to repeat. In the 6 races since, she has returned a sequence of 6, a void race, 7, 3, 10, and 6, which suggests she is running consistently enough without quite finding the finishing kick to trouble the leaders. A third place in that run is the brightest recent flicker.

Most of her racing has come in Class 6, the entry-level tier of British racing, where you might expect a horse to eventually find her comfort zone. But in 15 races at that level, she has not won once — a fact that raises a genuine question about whether she simply needs everything to fall perfectly right, the way it did that day at Bath, to show her best. Her regular partner in the saddle, Isobelle Chalmers, has ridden her 12 times without a win between them, though placing 8 times from 27 career races at least shows Little Miss Magic is rarely out of contention entirely.

She is trained by Patrick Chamings, whose yard in Baughurst, Hampshire, has sent out 11 winners this season — so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. Little Miss Magic, though, seems to be one of those horses who keeps the yard patient and hopeful. She raced just yesterday, so she is as active as they come, and with Bath presumably still circled on the calendar, there is always the chance that the track that made her once might do so again.
