Four races in, the four-year-old has yet to win or even finish in the places. The recent form figures tell a straightforward story: two fifth-place finishes sandwiched between two runs where Lincall didn't complete the course. That's not the record of a horse who looks like it's about to turn a corner — it's the record of one still searching for any kind of foothold in the sport.

There is something to hold onto, though. Lincall has been off the track for around 90 days, which suggests the team at Longwood have taken a step back and given the horse time to regroup rather than keep running it into the same walls. Whether that break leads anywhere remains to be seen, but it at least implies there's a plan. Elliott's yard doesn't keep horses around without a reason. Whether Lincall can justify that faith is the question every run from here will need to start answering.
