She was finishing deep in the field not long ago, and she has worked her way into fourth place twice in a row. She has not won, and she has not placed in the formal sense, but the trend is genuinely upward. Horses that suddenly find a bit of form after a slow start can surprise people, and Lily Parr looks like she is getting closer to something.

She ran just yesterday, so she is as live and active a horse as you will find. Her regular partner in the saddle is Robbie Colgan, who has ridden her in five of her nine races without a win between them — but given the improving form line, that partnership may be building toward something rather than simply running on empty.

She is trained by Sheila Lavery at Summerhill in County Meath, one of Ireland's most storied training areas. Lavery's yard has sent out three winners already this season, so the operation knows how to get a horse ready to win. The fact that Lily Parr has not managed it yet does not mean the team has given up — horses at four years old are still developing, and patience is often part of the plan.

She is not a horse you would back with your mortgage right now, but she is also not a horse to dismiss entirely. Nine runs in, showing steady improvement across her last half-dozen races, trained by someone who clearly gets results — Lily Parr looks like a horse that is learning her trade. The question is whether that fourth place becomes a third, then a second, and eventually something worth cheering for.
