That single win came at Uttoxeter in December 2024, and it remains the defining moment of a career that has otherwise been spent finishing second, third, and occasionally further back. One win from ten races is a 10% win rate — roughly one in every ten tries — which is modest, but the places tell a more interesting story. This is not a horse that disappears out the back. Over its best trip, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, it has won one from three races, a 33% win rate that suggests the distance really does matter. Get the conditions right, and it becomes a genuinely different proposition.

The trainer Alastair Ralph, based in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, has had a productive season — 25 winners from the yard — and clearly has a soft spot for this horse. He points to a third-place finish at Hereford before Christmas in a competitive contest as evidence that the form is stronger than it looks on paper, noting that both the winner and runner-up that day have since gone on to win themselves. In other words, Lightningupourdays ran well in decent company. Plans have been disrupted recently — a scheduled run at Uttoxeter was called off, forcing a rethink — which adds a layer of frustration to what is already a stop-start career.

The most intriguing detail, though, is what Ralph is looking forward to. He is keen to switch this horse to fences, a move that will have to wait until next season. Jumping fences rather than hurdles is often where a horse finds a second wind — the fences suit a different style of jumping, and plenty of horses have transformed once they made the switch. If Lightningupourdays runs as well over fences as its Hereford run suggests it can over hurdles, that is a conversation worth having again in the autumn.
