The recent form offers little encouragement. A fourth, two fifths, another fourth, and then two blank results in the last couple of races — the numbers tell a story of a horse that turns up, runs around, and finishes somewhere in the middle of the pack. Jockey Rory Cleary has partnered Liberty Looming five times without a win between them, and nothing in their shared record suggests a breakthrough is imminent.
What makes this puzzling rather than simply grim is the context of the yard behind the horse. Adam Nicol, training out of Seahouses in Northumberland, has sent out 26 winners this season — that is a yard in form, a team that clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. Liberty Looming just hasn't been one of them. With the horse having raced just one day ago, it is clearly still active and being campaigned, which means the team hasn't given up. Whether that faith will eventually be rewarded is the question every racing fan who has followed a stubborn non-winner will recognise all too well.
