That one win came at Goodwood on 24 May 2025, and it was not just any win — it was a Class 2 race, which puts it among the better races run in Britain. For a horse that typically competes at Class 4 level, where it has started four times without ever troubling the winner, that Goodwood victory was a significant step up in class, and Liberate rose to meet it. That is genuinely unusual. Most horses that run in better company for the first time find the jump in quality too steep; Liberate found it a perfect fit.

The distance also matters. At a mile and one or two furlongs — a middle-distance trip that suits horses with stamina and a smooth, sustained gallop — Liberate has won 1 from 5 races, a 20% win rate. That is double the overall career average, and Goodwood at that trip is exactly where the horse found its best form.

Liberate is trained by Denis Gerard Hogan, whose yard in Cloughjordan, County Tipperary has sent out 56 winners this season alone — a busy, productive operation that clearly knows how to place a horse to its best advantage. That Goodwood run was a masterclass in finding the right race at the right time. The horse raced just one day ago and remains active, which means the yard — sorry, the team — are keeping Liberate busy and are presumably hunting for the conditions that unlocked that Goodwood performance once more. Whether Liberate can repeat it is the open question. The recent string of double-digit finishes suggests it has not yet found that level again. But any horse capable of winning a top-end race once is capable of doing it again.
